Off to Arvon for VASW arts writing retreat. No internet or phone for a week

I haven’t blogged yet this year, so Happy New Year.

I’m about to travel back in time to deepest darkest Devon to spend a week writing about art. Thanks to a bursary from VASW I’ll be joining others to focus on writing, thinking and imagining. Having had a few breathless moments tonight when I realised I won’t be online for a week, I am now beginning to consider how I will deal with this challenge.

I suspect my first walk will involve finding a mobile phone signal somewhere and tethering my iPad for a quick fix, like an alcoholic finding the nearest pub, or a sun worshipper finding a sunlamp.

There’s a lot of talk about being unwired for one day a week. Sounds fine. It will be fine. I’m not at all worried by it. If I sound a little anxious, well, maybe I am. But it’s ok, I can do tai chi with my youtube video. But I can’t. I could play my meditation app, but not without the internet. It’s a writing course, maybe I should write? Or draw? Or take photos? I may scribble notes but they won’t be legible, my handwriting has always been rubbish. Text messages? Sneaky tweets? I’ll take a torch to send morse code signals across the landscape. I’ll draw in the mud with sticks. Write in the condensation on the cold glass of windows. Postits.

So goodbye virtual world, I will be back I’m sure. And as soon as I am, I’ll blog about it.

I'm an artist and also commission contemporary art in unusual locations. As a producer, I fundraise, curate, project manage and deliver projects. I'm also a writer and film-maker.
